In this first two novels, Flaubert emphasized in realistic detail the essential banality and boredom of life in the provinces and in the capital. Madame Bovary, which tells the story of a woman imprisoned by her middle-class surroundings, is also a harsh attack by Flaubert to the moral conservatism, rough manners, and unsophisticated taste of the emergent middle class.
