The history of observatories in general, and that of the Islamic observatory in particular, has been the subject of only cursory and isolated studies. It has not heretofore received a critical and comprehensive treatment. The present work, which aims to fill this gap as far as the Islamic observatory is concerned, owes its origin to a chapter of my Ph. D. thesis prepared at Harvard University. That chapter dealt and with the observatories of Islam and the status of astrology and astronomy in the medieval Moslem world.
